“Who actually raised this animal?”
It is the question H+J Cattle Company asks families to consider the next time they buy beef. At its Saluda farm, the answer comes with names, a place and an invitation to visit.
Duncan Johnson and brothers Chad and Eric Hipp founded H+J in May 2024. For the Hipp brothers, the family’s connection to cattle reaches back to Hipp’s Dairy, where their father, Allen, worked alongside his brother until his death in 2016.
Today, his sons are part of another cattle operation in the same county. H+J describes its founders as third-generation farmers, carrying their experience into a business that makes openness part of its public promise.
In a post explaining what sets the farm apart, H+J said its cattle are grown and raised on site in Saluda. Visitors are welcome to see the operation, ask questions and learn more about the beef they bring home.
Those questions matter to the founders. How were the cattle raised? How were they finished? What does a label actually tell you?
H+J describes its own beef as grass-fed and grain-finished. It makes that distinction plainly, arguing that accurate descriptions respect both the customer and the farmer whose work determines how an animal is raised.
“We don’t call our meat something it’s not,” the farm wrote.
Knowing your farmer turns those words into a conversation. There is someone to explain the process, answer a question and show you where the cattle live.
H+J expressed that connection in another statement:
“We know the cattle. We know the farm. Because we raised them.”
Behind the beef is a family history, a partnership and a farm in Saluda willing to open the conversation. Its message is simple enough to carry home:
Know your farmer. Know your beef.
